Alicante – one of our favourite second-tier destinations in Spain!
One of our favourite second-tier destinations in Spain – and there are quite a few! – is the beautiful city of Alicante, at the Mediterranean Sea.
Alicante is the capital of the province of the same name, in the southern part of the Valencian Community. With approx. 330.000 inhabitants, it is the 11th largest city in Spain. It is a historical Mediterranean port and still one of the main harbours in Spain – it is the only harbour with a direct ferry connection to Algeria.
Its historical city centre is filled with baroque buildings bearing testimony of the cities past when it was a major sea port. The main thoroughfare of the city is the Rambla, lined with palm trees, outdoor cafes and ice-cream parlours serving the unusual local drink, horchata, made with almonds. Alicante’s cuisine is typically Mediterranean, and very Spanish – undoubtedly one of its most renowned tourist attractions. The history of Alicante, its geographical location, and the climate and the fertility of its lands give richness and variety to the region’s gastronomy.
There are plenty of shops, parks and gardens, marble-paved plazas and the broad Explanada d’Espanya encircling the yacht harbour with its mosaic promenade. Along the Alicante harbour you find beautiful long alleys for nice relaxing walks, enjoying the palm trees and the mild climate. Famous for its excellent weather, the city invites you to take a trip along the coast or to the beautiful island of Tabarca.
